I’ve been meaning to write a few posts about the environment. Global warming is on everyone’s minds, its a hot topic for the presidential election in 2008 and as some would say, if we don’t stop Global Warming. We are all gonna die!

Well I’m not so sure about all that. I’m not sure that if I change my light bulbs to energy efficient light bulbs I will make any impact on Global Warming. I do know though that for the most part most of humanity treats the environment like shit. I’ve been guilty of mistreating our planet myself and thus I can’t stand here and be a judge or point fingers.

But there are a few things we can all do to minimize the impact we have in our environment. I try to do some of these all the time, some other ones are only done when I can.

• Turn off all lights when I’m not in a room. Even if I am in the room if I don’t need it, I keep it off. Somebody at my work always turns the lights on, just for the sake of turning it on, despite the fact that this person simply goes into an office that has its own lights!
• All my computers go to sleep 15-45 minutes after inactivity.
• If I can carpool, I do. Grocery shopping, going out to lunch, etc.
• I take short showers, and I shave in the shower.
• I recycle whenever possible. I also reuse stuff, a lot. I fix things that can be fixed, so I don’t have to buy a new one and dispose of the one I have.
• I use cruise control, probably more than anyone I know. If I am going more than 25mph I am probably on cruise control. This minimizes the inconsistencies on my acceleration and overall it improves my mileage.
• I rarely use air conditioner.
• I try to use CFL bulbs. But they minght not be as great as you might imagine so do your research
• I try to buy local produce.
• I try to avoid Styrofoam products.
• I pickup one piece of litter when I can. (Like on the street or somewhere outside where I would normally pickup trash, eg, my driveway).

Frankly I’m not sure how of a difference I can make, but I do know that these are things we can all do and it doesn’t cost us more than a few seconds of our time.
