Iron Mans Suit Defies Physics — Mostly

I went out to see IronMan last night. It blew me away, you should definitely watch it in a theatre that offers good quality sound, DTS is awesome. The movie is well done, the story line is believable and you actually end up liking the whole story. I wish it would have been longer but oh well. I would even say that I like this movie better than Transformers. Of course the stories are way different, but they both have great fighting scenes and excellent animation. I can’t wait for the next chapter of the Iron Man franchise. My buddy David tells me that the main actors had to agree to a 3 movie deal.

It is just enough to leave you wanting more. Oh yeah and when you go see it, you should stick around until after the credits.

I also found this story (below), which is the stuff us nerds care about. The article points out two facts; the suit is not that far fetched; but until we have a new way of harnessing the energy needed to power a device like that, the suit will remain the stuff of comic books. It is simply impossible (today) to have the required energy in a practical format that could be used for such applications.

Tony Starks amazing suit is a long way from realization, mostly due to practical energy constraints.

As a comic book fan and physics professor, I am looking forward to the big screen debut of Iron Man. This is due, in part, to the fact that instead of getting belted with gamma rays or being born a demon from hell, industrialist and scientist Tony Stark got his super powers by means of his engineering genius.

But just how realistic is Starks amazing suit?

Sadly, nearly all of the features of the Iron Man suit, with one important exception, are not likely to be realized anytime soon. Lets look at each of the suits major elements in turn.

remember Virginia Tech

I think we still don’t know why senseless killings like the Virginia Tech shooting happen. I hope one day these grotesque acts of violence in our country will cease to exist, we have had several shootings since the one in Virginia Tech last year. People outside of the US claim that this is an isolated issue in our Country. Is this a gun control issue? Is this a social issue? Continue Reading “remember Virginia Tech” »

K9 training at SFO

Czar I got to see something kind of cool the other day at SFO (San Francisco Airport). The SFPD was doing training for their K9 units.

Both of the dogs are German Shepherd. I was blown away by their calculated movements and relentless focus. No matter what was going on around them. A child crying, a lady that smashed her luggage while trying to go up the escalator, my camera and the flash. Both dogs did not care at all about my presence or anyone else’s. They simply follow the Officers’ commands and remain alert while searching for anything that will trigger their sensitive sense of smell. Continue Reading “K9 training at SFO” »

Serious drive thru pharmacy.

Brilliant, xcept for the fumes

In my last trip to Mexico, I thought this was very interesting. They have drive through pharmacies and stores, but not like you know them here in the US. When you’re down there, you don’t pull up to a window and order a few things and wait. They have drive through pharmacies where you actually drive into a small building and people assist you from both sides of the car. You tell them what you want and as you drive through it, they put it in bags then tally it up. You pay at the end and then your bags are delivered to your windows and you’re on your way

Non-compete agreements are illegal.

I recently found out that non-compete agreements are illegal in California. There are two small exceptions, but they don’t quite apply to me so I can’t take advantage of those.

Why was I looking for a non-compete agreement in the first place? Well when you are doing business, over time you develop processes and procedures that might give you an edge over your competitors. Maybe you use the data you gather from your customers in certain ways to promote your business or improve on existing products. Perhaps you collect statistics on certain products you sell and you process this information to add new products. Continue Reading “Non-compete agreements are illegal.” »

Starbucks rewards!?

I read this today on Boring Market. I like the idea that regular/loyal customers at starbucks would get addons for free. I would really welcome this benefit. Lately I’ve been cutting back on my white chocolate mochas because they are so expensive, I usually get a quad shot and those 2 added shots really drain your wallet. I know I probably should just cut Starbucks out of my diet and budget altogether but its so good! Before I read about this, I had been pondering on the idea of a rewards type of system that would work at Starbucks. I thought that there should be an “unlimited” plan so to speak. iPhoto kinda kicks ass.

Despite really liking some Apple products, namely my MacBook Pro and iPod, I wasn’t a big fan of iPhoto until recently. Every time I tried using it I found it to be weak and lacking in some areas. Recently though I’ve been impressed with its ability to do some significant photo improvements, and a really good job at managing collections.

Take for example this photo I took the other day. Compare it to the one after doing a couple of basic changes, these are basic and simple but I like the fact that I don’t have to open up photoshop.

Prosper Days 2008

I recently got the opportunity to attend Prosper Days. This is an event geared towards those interested in participating on Prosper. As it turns out, attendees were either lenders, borrowers or new members to the Prosper community that haven’t started lending or borrowing money yet. Prosper started in 2006, and it is one of the largest P2P lending services, if not the largest. Currently they have over 120 million dollars in loans. During the conference one of the panelists loosely estimated that the total amount might be around 2 billion within 5 years! Continue Reading “Prosper Days 2008″ »

Back in town

I just returned from Mexico today, I went there to watch the WRC. It was a lot of fun and I got a lot of pictures. I have a lot of stuff to catch up on now that I’m back so it may be a day or two before I can show you the pictures, but for now I posted a few highlights on my Flickr if you’re interested. I had a blast.

Muchisimas gracias a nuestros anfitriones, por aguantarnos y llevarnos de aqui, alla, y a todos lados. Espero que nos veamos otra vez pronto. Gracias, gracias gracias.

Thanks to all of you that have dropped in to say hi from the Prosper conference, if you can’t find the contact form as some of you pointed out, please go here http://muychingon.com/contact/. Thanks to all of you that left comments over the past few days; if I haven’t responded to them I will do so in the next day or so as time allows. Thanks again for stopping by.

Strange drink, essence of chicken.

I’m killing some time at the airport. Our flight was supposed to leave at 6:55, then they moved it to 7:30, not it says 8:44. All because ofa little drizzle. Sigh.

Well, I dug up this picture from my recent photo sprees, and I thought I’d share it with you.
