Study out to prove faith

I got a link to a news article from David, the article is about the University of Oxford’s study to determine the origins of faith in god.

Wired News - AP News
He said anthropological and philosophical research suggests that faith in God is a universal human impulse found in most cultures around the world, even though it has been waning in Britain and western Europe.

It seems that the leading figures in this study are in the mindset that religion is built-in to our systems. Do you think this would be an objective study?

“One implication that comes from this is that religion is the default position, and atheism is perhaps more in need of explanation,” Roger Trigg said.

Can you really prove that faith is innate?

I don’t think so. While history shows that societies in general have always had a religious inclination, I doubt that this trend will continue in the coming centuries or even millenia. As humanity, if we survive our conflicts of faith, then it is safe to say that science, the argument of reason and logical thinking will lead the way for future generations. I think that we’ve always been religious because we didn’t have any other way to explain our world around us. Our ancestors had to try to make sense of the rain, the sun coming up in the morning and setting down at night, other phenomena were simply unexplainable to them. Their explanation was that a “greater being” was in control of all this. We obviously now know that there is a scientific reason why things happen, and it is not magically designed.

Wow, this is one lucky guy

So this guy crashed his plane last week… usually that means that anyone in the plane would have been burned to a crisp. This guy actually survived. He was a little dazed and confused. But he’s definitely lucky to have survived such an accident. Continue Reading “Wow, this is one lucky guy” »

Apparently this 31 year old woman discovered a bunch of needles in her body when she went to the doctor for a routine X-ray. The theory is that the needles were inserted in her when she was a baby. You’ll have to read the article to find out more. But this just looks painful and dangerous.

World’s Top 100 Most Livable Cities - says who?

I was surprised to see that the US doesn’t have a city listed until number 27! That is pretty crazy if you think about it. We think the US is the greatest place to live, but according to this list… it is not. Once you get to some of the cities that the US does have in this list, you’ll see Los Angeles as one of them. Los Angeles is listed as #55. I can think of 100 cities I’d rather live than L.A. it is overcrowded, dirty, traffic is horrible and crime loves it. I wonder what are the 39 key points used to judge quality of life.

Mercer Human Resource Consulting, which provides advice to multinational companies on international assignments, has come up with a global ranking of the world’s most livable cities based on 39 key quality-of-life issues.

My condolences

My most sincere condolences go out to all the families affected by today’s tragedy. It is inexplicable how something like this could happen.

For those of you living under a rock… if you haven’t heard about the shooting, you can watch this news clip.

Here’s what Bush had to say about the matter:

Our nation is shocked and saddened by the news of the shooting at Virginia Tech today. Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary and learning. Then that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom and every American community. Today, our nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones at Virginia Tech. We hold the victims in our hearts; we lift them up in our prayers and we ask a loving God to comfort those who are suffering today.

Here are some articles of interest:

Virginia Tech replaced the University of Texas as the site of the deadliest mass shooting on a U.S. college campus.

It’s just chaos down there, pretty much. They were making everyone stay inside and they didn’t know what was going on at first

The gunman’s suicide brings the death toll to 33.

A Israeli lecturer was was among those killed in Monday’s fatal shooting attack at Virginia Tech

Today’s definition of douchebag

Check out this news story from today. The nerve to steal from little league. Beware of who handles the money for your little-leaguers.

Prosecutors believe between 2004 and 2006, the couple stole more than $20,000 from Little League fundraisers, mostly from the annual fireworks sale. Other money stolen by the couple came from registration and the snack bar, said Deputy District Attorney John Goritz.

New York City to Reward Poor for Doing Right Thing

Does anyone else think this is lame? Why would we reward people for doing what they should be doing in the first place?

New York City to Reward Poor for Doing Right Thing - New York Times
The payments could range from $25 for exemplary attendance in elementary school to $300 for a high score on an important exam, city officials said.

The size zero pill | the Daily Mail

I heard about this in the morning news. As usual, the tv news are months behind, this article is back from October last year. Regardless of its age it is worth reading and knowing about this.

The size zero pill is basically a pill used to treat horses. Yet people are using it to loose weight. Now… you tell me, why would anyone in their right mind subject themselves to this potentially fatal practice? I don’t know nor can I comprehend it. But my word of advice on this is: if it says it is for animal consumption… you should not eat it. Period.
