Genetic Material Found on Meteorite

This is pretty cool, and takes us one step closer to solving the puzzle of evolution, creation and otherwise the origin of everything we know as we know it.

Although it’s only one part of the answer, we have come another step closer to solving the question of how life originated. Two necessary molecular ingredients of DNA and RNA have been confirmed to have originated from outer space. They join the handful of amino acids we have discovered to have been delivered to Earth on the backs of asteroids and comets. Publishing in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters, the team of research scientists from the US and Europe have demonstrated that uracil and xanthine are present in fragments of the Murchison meteorite and are not terrestrial in origin. Studies of the Murchison meteorite, which crashed in Australia in 1969, are routinely criticized over concerns of Earthly contamination.

Irrefutable proof for evolution?

I see a video like this as proof that evolution, is indeed true and affected by the survival of the some genes. In this case, the natural selection factor of the equation is substituted with the manual selection of the parents. In a way, this shows that overtime, animals do evolve and we can roughly select certain traits to be passed on. The motivations for breeding this cow are certainly monetary, but I’m sure that there’s a lot to learn from in regards to to genetics, and evolution. The Genographic Project

I keep hearing about this new project led by National Geographic. Its called the Genographic project. I think its very intruiguing to know that there is a global effort to find out where we actually come from. It is long been suggested that humans come from somewhere in Africa. The scientific evidence suggests this but until recent times, the amount of resources needed to research this was too much for a project of this size to be feasible.

The Genographic Project is seeking to chart new knowledge about the migratory history of the human species by using sophisticated laboratory and computer analysis of DNA contributed by hundreds of thousands of people from around the world. In this unprecedented and real-time research effort, the Genographic Project is closing the gaps of what science knows today about humankind’s ancient migration stories

As technology prices go down and globalization progresses, this massive project is becoming more of a reality than just a dream. I recently ordered my participation kit. My mother did this late last year and a couple of weeks ago she got her results back. They are  very interesting to see; although a lot of it has very technical information that requires a lot of reading or training to really understand the results.

See all about it here.

QOTD

Irrationally held truths may be more harmful than reasoned errors.

Huxley used the term ‘agnostic’ to describe his own views on religion, a term whose use has continued to the present day, and which throws light on his demanding criteria for proof in science

Steam engine from a votive candle

This is really cool. A simple little hack to add an interesting touch to a simple tea light. I wonder what would happen if you doubled this up and ended up with 4 propulsion tips? That is something I’d like to try. Also, it would be interesting to try a bunch of these in a pool. You know like those floating candle holders that people use at pool parties and stuff. Anyway, enough of my ramblings. check out the video. Its really cool, but I do have to warn you of the uber-geek-factor involved.

ROFL. If that doesn’t make you smile then I dont know what to do for you. I’m watching Discovery Channel and they are showing a project that recorded elephants like never before. They were recorded with the use “mobile dung cams” So they made cameras that look like the elephant dropings and placed them in their most frequented spots. Then they can control the cameras from a distance and actually change their position simply by controlling the remote vehicle hidden inside. Pretty nifty eh?.

Some of the shots they took are beyond amazing (video link). The most impressive scene I watched showed two bull elephants fighting. If you’re into watching stuff about animals this is something to check out. They also caught a new elephant being born and the first days of its life. Really really upclose.

Some of the cameras used are said to cost upwards of 10,000 British Pounds and are custom designed to fit the enviroment. They also made salmon-cam, boulder-cam and other types. All to catch wildlife up close and personal. Pretty damn cool I thought.

The Wetass

More information on extra appendages

So after the show I watched earlier, I had to do a little more research.

I found a couple pages relevant to the topic:

This one explains a little more on the logistics of inserting an ear under the ear… exactly waht I watched.

The lifting of the ear form and the lobule construction would be done 4-6 months after the cartilage has been placed beneath the skin. Alternatives to using cartilage are silicon implants or surgical implant material such as Medpor, which is a porous polyethylene substance. The advantage of Medpor over silicon would be that it allows vascularisation and ingrowth of tissue into the implant. Cartilage is preferable, but it requires an operation under general anaesthesia…link

This is an older news article..

While it cannot hear, with an implanted sound chip and a proximity sensor, the ear will be able to speak to anyone who gets close to it.

The artist also has plans to couple it with a modem and a wearable computer so that it doubles as an internet antenna, able to broadcast RealAudio sounds to supplement the local sounds that the actual ears hear, thus scaling up the body’s senses…… link

So basically what I saw was an ear made of cartriladge or Medpor. How bizarre! It does remind me of that picture we all saw years back that showed a mouse with a human ear seemingly growing out of his back. If you haven’t seen it, its in one of the articles. But here it is… eww.
